OnScale: The Future of Engineering

By Marshall Williams 13 July 2018

Every startup begins with an aspiration to solve a challenging problem. If it were easy, anyone would do it. In my past startup, NextInput, we brought amazing new hardware technology to market; however, we did so in spite of our engineering tools, not because of them. It was extremely painful developing hardware technology using expensive, outdated, legacy computer-aided engineering (CAE) software tools running on clunky old “high-performance” computers (HPC). I got tired of watching the CAE and HPC space evolve at a much slower pace than other dynamic spaces like ERP and CRM. There had to be a better way.

At OnScale, my latest startup which is emerging from stealth today, our mission is to give hardware engineers access to world-class CAE tools and HPC resources they need to innovate, solve complex problems, and ultimately bring next-generation technologies to market. As engineers, we’re building our own dream tools – the Future of Engineering.

Meet the OnScale Solver-as-a-Service Platform

OnScale has created the world’s first Solver-as-a-Service platform that combines unparalleled computer-aided engineering (CAE) software tools and multi-physics solvers with the limitless capabilities of scalable Cloud High Performance Computing (HPC). With OnScale, engineers are no longer limited to inefficient legacy CAE solvers running on fixed on-premise HPC resources – they can now run engineering problems on as many Cloud HPC resources as they want.

The OnScale Platform breaks performance and cost constraints for startups and enterprise engineering teams alike with a seamlessly integrated “CAE in the Cloud” architecture and a pay-as-you-go subscription pricing model.

OnScale empowers engineers to solve massively complex engineering problems and reduce design cycles from months to days or even hours.  OnScale delivers unparalleled performance at any scale to engineers designing products in the $40B IoT, biomedical, 5G RF, driverless car, and a range of other industries.

The OnScale platform removes cost consequences from guesswork and endless expensive trial-and-error physical prototypes. Imagine what engineers will be able to dream up and accomplish when risk in the design process is no longer a factor. Imagine a day in the near future when rapid innovation and expedited time to market for next-generation products are the norm.

We’re also excited to offer engineers design freedom. They will no longer need to worry about buying expensive new CAE tools, paying for maintenance and support, procuring costly HPC hardware, or waiting for IT to deploy and maintain CAE systems. Engineers can literally download OnScale, open up a few free examples, and start solving major engineering challenges in minutes.

What our customers say:

  • Cenofex Innovations (another Hardware Startup), Dr. Michael Weaver, CEO & Founder: OnScale’s excellent self-service training and support, combined with OnScale’s team of experts, enabled us to quickly gain ground and start generating insightful engineering information to ultimately yield better product designs.
  • Emerson Automation Solutions, Mo Zarkan, Engineering Manager: Our engineering design cycles come in bursts throughout the year. OnScale’s SaaS model helps us best utilize our R&D expenses as demand for CAE and HPC fluctuates.
  • VisualSonics, Chris Chaggares, Design Engineer:  By using OnScale, we were able to run our design optimization study 1,000 times faster than using our old CAE and HPC. As a result, we were able to cut our prototyping costs by 90%, double our device performance, and get to market six months faster.
  • Thornton Tomasetti, Tom Scarangello, CEO: OnScale will help engineers deliver on the promise of future technologies like 5G and IoT that we’re all waiting for.  Initiatives like 5G can only succeed through rapid innovation, and innovation only happens when engineers are unconstrained from cost and computational limitations. OnScale will make a huge market impact because it makes world-class CAE tools with unlimited Cloud HPC solver resources available to every engineer.
